See how real people notice, trust, and choose between your brand and its closest competitors in Google Search and AI Mode.
We design and run private usability studies that reveal how people actually interact with Google Search and AI Mode results when multiple brands in your niche appear side by side. These studies show what draws attention, what signals credibility, and which factors move a user from noticing a brand to trusting and choosing it. Unlike public research, each project is built around one client and a defined set of competitors. The findings translate directly into strategy: how to strengthen brand visibility, sharpen messaging, and shape content so users not only find you, but prefer you over the alternatives.
SEO tools show who is winning in search. This study reveals why a brand and its closest competitors are winning or losing in the moments that decide a purchase. Focus groups and surveys tell you what people say they value. Our approach captures what they actually do and trust inside a real search environment. Traditional usability studies examine a single website or app in isolation. This research observes behavior across a full competitive set, the way users really encounter it. Video sessions with a think-aloud protocol, paired with transcript analysis, surface the language patterns, hesitations, and emotional cues that a survey can never reach. The result is a view into genuine motivation, not stated preference.
Each study produces a clear, insight-rich package built for decision-making rather than raw data review. It includes an executive summary of key findings, visual behavioral charts of user interaction patterns, transcript highlights that capture authentic thought processes, persona-level insights, and actionable recommendations organized by theme such as Trust and Visibility. The final report distills complex user behavior into practical guidance you can share across teams, from SEO and brand strategy to content and product marketing.

Beyond Clicks: How Users Think, Trust, and Choose

How the Research Works
Framing the goals with you
We start collaboratively, defining the study’s research questions and hypotheses together and selecting four to seven key competitors. From there we map what you most need to understand: how your brand is positioned within the niche, and how users encounter competing content across search and AI surfaces.Study design and methodology
The structure mirrors our published public studies but focuses entirely on your niche. Participants complete structured tasks while speaking their thoughts aloud, which lets us capture two layers at once: observable micro-behaviors such as dwell time, hover activity, and scrolling, alongside the verbal cues that reveal perception and intent. Using our RAG-based AI analysis, transcripts and behavioral data are synthesized to identify the language, emotions, and trust signals that drive how users evaluate and choose between brands. What We Measure
Visibility and SERP behavior
We benchmark how often your brand and competitors appear across organic, sponsored, shopping, local, and AI surfaces, then go a layer deeper into the micro-behaviors that raw rankings miss: relative dwell time, click patterns, and attention within specific SERP features. This is especially valuable for clients who want to understand how users engage with features like organic blocks or local packs.Competitor intelligence in AI answers
Inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, we identify whether Google frames competitors as authoritative, whether rivals appear as default recommendations before a user even scrolls, and where your brand is present or invisible. The output maps competitive advantage against the gaps you can close.Trust and perception signals
Traditional search: we observe when users skip an AI answer in favor of a brand they already know. AI Mode: we capture when users accept an AI answer at face value versus seeking a direct source or interacting with the interface. Mental models: we surface the expectations users carry into a niche, for example, “I thought this brand would show a price here.”Emotional triggers and brand framing
We identify the real differentiators users voice out loud, the rationale behind a decision that click data alone never explains, and translate those moments into concrete trust-building opportunities for your content.Behavior around competitors
Across both search and AI modes, we watch how people compare and choose between rivals, which signals sway them (reviews, authority domains, pricing, credibility), and how brand familiarity shapes whether they trust an AI-surfaced company.Content strategy implications
We learn which formats earn placement in AI answers within your niche, whether instructional, authoritative, or commercial, and which content investments most reliably maximize AI-first visibility. The findings point directly at what to build next. What You Receive

What a Study Looks Like
■ Illustrative example — not a client engagement
The following is based on a real category we analyzed internally. It is provided to show the type of findings and framing a private client study produces. The brands named are real; this was not a commissioned engagement and no client relationship is implied.
In the study, participants explored product results comparing Meater, ThermoWorks, and TaylorUSA in Google AI Mode. The panel was pre-qualified for interest in cooking and technology rather than for any prior interest in thermometers, so reactions reflected how an engaged but neutral buyer responds to each brand in context.
What the sessions revealed
Meater drew the strongest positive engagement. Participants responded well to the “Smart Wireless Meat Thermometer” framing, and cues like free shipping and clear availability added a sense of trust and urgency. ThermoWorks read as highly credible, helped by visible review counts and a strong star rating. Its “Professional Instant-Read” framing, however, led several participants to perceive it as built for commercial kitchens rather than everyday home cooking. TaylorUSA drew comparatively little attention. Participants spent noticeably less time reading its content in the AI answer panel before moving on. Across all three, participants moved fluidly between the AI Mode answer and the visual product panels. Product trust and ease-of-use claims were consistently the deciding factors before anyone clicked out to a brand site.
How findings are reported
In a live engagement, each of these directional findings is backed by precise behavioral metrics in the full report: relative dwell time, scroll depth, hover activity, and engagement rates per brand, drawn directly from session recordings and coded transcripts. The summary above shows the shape of the insight; the deliverable quantifies it.
These patterns are consistent with our published AI Mode brand research from October 2025, which documented similar dynamics in how users weigh authority, framing, and familiarity when AI surfaces multiple brands at once.
This example shows how findings are structured and reported. A private client study would be designed around your brand, your competitors, and the specific research questions that matter to your team.
